Unexpected Memories

Looking back on trips taken, it’s interesting which memories stand the test of time and this summer’s holiday in Malaysia is no exception. The days in Malakah’s Red Square, Penang’s Georgetown and Kuala Lumpur’s bustling Central Market are not the moments that first come to mind. The event I most reminisce about, was a rainy travel day in the Cameron Highlands.

The winding narrow roads, which seemed to become more treacherous as the elevation increased, afforded both spectacular and terrifying views in equal measure. The rain, which started as a light drizzle early that morning, had become a torrential downpour by the time we reached our destination, the Boh Tea Plantation.

Utterly unprepared for such a heavy rainfall and even less prepared for the chilly temperature, we found ourselves wet and shivering, waiting for a tour of the tea plantation’s factory. After an hour’s wait, the electricity (whose absence was prohibiting the scheduled tour) flicked back into life. Within a few minutes however, electricity was lost again only this time with no hope of return and tea plantation plans were abandoned.

Fortunately, the return journey had a few surprises in store. As the rain eventually eased, it gave way to dramatic views across the lush green hillsides. Streams had forged their way through the foliage, down the craggy rocks and across the winding road. Most impressive though, was Lata Iskandar Waterfall, impressive enough on the upward drive, but following heavy sustained rain now roared in all its magnificence.

Lata Iskandar Waterfall

I only have two regrets from our day in the highlands. My lack of a waterproof jacket being the first and secondly, my inability to take photographs which truly do the breathtaking scenery justice.
